South’s Georgian colonial style building, was designed by George Haas and opened in 1928. Its soaring 133 foot tower and classic facade are iconic in the hearts of Grosse Pointers, and have been featured in films and architectural forums for decades.

The Preservation Committee was established in 1990 by concerned preservationists, parents, and alumni who recognized the architectural and historical significance of Grosse Pointe South and wanted to ensure the historic integrity of the campus was maintained. In 1992, the group succeeded in getting South placed on the Register of Historic Sites in Michigan. 

The Preservation Committee has been instrumental in maintaining the high school building’s historic integrity while supporting modern building upgrades. Through the generosity of our members, alumni, and donors, we have contributed to refurbishing the Auditorium and Student Commons, building the John and Marlene Boll Athletic Center, erecting the new gate at the Grosse Pointe Boulevard entrance, restoring the windows and doors in Cleminson Hall and creating an adjacent conference room, and installing a secure entrance vestibule. In addition to these major projects, we have advised and contributed to hallway lighting, bathroom remodels, door restoration, paneling, flooring, and furniture acquisition. Our dedicated volunteers regularly deep clean Cleminson Hall and decorate for the holidays.
